SOCKS, an 18-month-old labrador-collie cross is in need of a new home after being abandoned by her owners at Christmas.

She is the latest unwanted pet to feature in The Northern Echo's Petwatch column, which seeks to raise awareness of the plight of abandoned animals waiting to be re-homed by local charities.

Socks was taken to the vets by her owners between Christmas and New Year to be destroyed, because they could no longer cope with her.

Fortunately for Socks, it was the same vets used by the National Animal Sanctuary Support League centre in Darlington.

The vets got in touch with the charity and Socks is now waiting to find a new home.

Pauline Wilson, from the league, said: "Her owners couldn't cope with her.

"I think she was too boisterous for them. It is the usual story. People get a dog without really thinking it through and, before you know it, they can't cope. It is typical, but sad.

"Socks is a really nice dog. She is a favourite here.

"She will make a great pet for someone who has time and likes walking."
