THE North-East could play a leading role in the future of genetic medicine with a multi-million pound announcement expected today.

News that the region is likely to be chosen by the Government to host one of four £2.4m bio-tech business parks follows a £300,000 boost for the industry.

Science minister Lord Sainsbury unveiled a package to help buy equipment to further research into the use of the body's cells to treat disease and injury.

It is expected that any genetic park established in the North-East would be at Newcastle's International Centre for Life.

There are 28 bio-science companies in the area and a further 80 associated organisations.
