HEADTEACHERS in the Darlington area are being urged to nominate pupils from their schools for an award to mark their efforts.

Organisers of the Positive Young People Awards 2002 believe recognition for youngsters' efforts, however small, could do wonders for both the school and the pupil.

The £2.50 ticket price for the awards evening has been reduced to encourage people to support the event and give young people a boost.

Nominations for the awards, which will be presented in a ceremony at Darlington Civic Theatre on March 25, must be submitted by the end of the month.

Martin Webster, of the PS2K peer support team, which is organising the event, said: "Receiving a Positive Young People Award means a great deal to young people which, in turn, raises self-esteem and confidence, which has an effect on school life."

The purpose of the awards is to give young people the credit they deserve. PS2K is organising the event, in conjunction with Darlington Borough Council community services, Darlington Partnership and The Northern Echo.

Awards will be given in three categories: contribution to the community, outstanding achievement and against all odds. Two awards will be given in each category, for under-12s and under-18s, and all nominees will receive a certificate to mark their efforts.

Nominees must be under 18 on the day of the awards and have given their time voluntarily.

Forms must be sent to: James Gilbey, PS2K, Community Education, Darlington Borough Council, Town Hall, Feethams, Darlington, DL1 5QT, by January 31.

Collections will be taken on the night to raise money for Barnardo's, the children's charity.
