Cleveland County Pool - Tony Kay (Darlington) has again showed his consistency for Cleveland playing excellently throughout the year to finish joint top of the region one players averages to give himself a chance of getting back into the England Team.

Tony will travel to Great Yarmouth to play in the England trials in the national rankings. For the season Tony finished a very creditable joint sixth. The next player in the rankings from Cleveland was Paul Hickman who finished joint 18th, Peter Allinson (Darlington) came in 27th, Allan Baker 38th, Gareth Evans, Stuart Green and John Oswald all came in joint 48th.

In the ladies rankings Marie Waite will also be in the England trials having finished joint third in the region's rankings. In the national rankings she finished at 24th.

Lee Brennan and Pam McIvor both came in joint 15th, Sarah Bennet and Anne Louise Eaton both finished 19th with Pat Barker and Heather Morton just two places behind in 21st. Cleveland's three teams had a dismal season with the A team finishing third, the B team fifth and the ladies team third. East Yorkshire shocked all competitors by winning all three divisions.

Embassy Pool Tour

Cleveland will have two more players on the pool tour this year after Ricky Smith and Paul Lych both came through trials at Blackpool to earn their place on the coming year's tour. The finishing rankings for 2001 tour are Steve Woodier 43; Tony Short 69; Stuart Green 79 and Peter Allinson 96.

In the professional rankings Steve Woodier moves into the top 32 and is ranked 31. The first tour will be at Blackpool on February 2.

Riverside Car Sales Cleveland Champion of Champions Charity Challenge will take place in February. Any leagues who would like their champions and runners-up to compete against all the top teams from around the region can get an entry form by ringing (01642) 276840 or (01642) 821225. All the money raised will go to a nominated person or persons with a disability or illness who will benefit in any way from this charity event. The past winners of this even were Owington Farm, Billingham and Bridge Inn, Darlington.

Crook League

Crook Mill House looked to be on their way to a big home win when they took the first four points against Crook Olde Horse Shoe B through Norman Slack, Alan Bibby, John Winning and Ian Bibby. However the visitors fought back to take the remaining three points and stop their hosts cutting back into the Crook Belle Vue lead at the top of the table. The Olde Horse Shoe's singles winners were Dave Leighton and Peter Clement with James Ivil and Louie Holmes taking the doubles. The First Division has Crook Belle Vue six points ahead of the Mill House, who have a match in hand. Crook Travellers Rest B are now just three points behind the Mill in third place. In the Second Division, Crook Spitfire Club hold a five points lead at the top with second placed, Crook Jelly's Bar seven ahead of the White Swan and Willington Market.

Willington Area League

Willington Lion and Unicorn recovered from a 3-0 deficit to win the battle of the bottom teams in a re-arranged match. The Burn took the first three singles through Robbie Thompson, Lyndon Taylor and Tony Longhorne. The Lion and Unicorn then replied with singles wins from John McCann and Sharon Troy. They continued their recovery by taking both doubles point with wins from John McCann with Michael Pickering and Denise Walker with John Bolam. The visitors completed their victory when Denise Walker beat Shaun Pardew in the captain's game.

Tow Law Area League

The league leaders, Newhouse Club made a great start on their visit to Tow Law Station by taking the first three singles through Eddie Rowland, Keith Liddle and Bill Jones. However from that point the Station took over and levelled with wins from Ron Kitching, Norman Brown and Michael Bell. The Station went on to take all doubles points.

Willington Black Horse Tavern severely dented the title hopes of the visiting Prospect Club when they restricted their visitors to a lone point. The Prospect's winner was Phil Blyth whilst Mark Davis, Davey Lawrence, Andrew Irwin and Donald Young took the Horse to victory.

Howden Australian were prevented from moving into a challenging position when they only scored one point on their visit to Willington Brewer's Droop B. It was looking like a whitewash when Diane Fleming, Carol Hawkins, Jeff Sowerby and Carol Heslop took the first four points but Ray Newton prevented the ignominy of no score when he took the final point.
