A hamlet plagued by flooding is due to get defences.

The community of Castley, near Harrogate, which is made up of a cluster of homes and farms alongside the River Wharfe, near the Leeds-Harrogate-York rail line, could soon receive a £500,000 scheme to protect its properties.

A scheme prepared by the Environment Agency will involve building river embankments for a mile-long stretch of the Wharfe to prevent widespread flooding in the lowland area near the Arthington rail embankment and viaduct.

A spokesman for the agency said it hoped to start work in May if planning permission, tabled with Harrogate Borough Council, is granted.

Castley has suffered floods for years, but notably in the past decade.

The agency spokesman said work involved excavating the bank to ensure water did not seep beneath the anti-flood mounds.

Work should be completed by September.

The scheme will protect 16 houses and three farms
