MINISTER for young people and learning Ivan Lewis yesterday launched a project to boost education in the North-East.

The launch of the Connexions Card is the first phase in what will be a national scheme to encourage all 16 to 19-year-olds to stay on in learning.

Young people in the region will pioneer the card, which will enable them to bank points for participation in learning. They will then be able to exchange their points for discounted or free goods.

The launch took place at Egglescliffe School, Eaglescliffe, on Teesside.

Mr Lewis said: "We know we have to be creative in motivating young people to learn. They need support, advice and resources to make the most of the opportunities that are out there for them and the card will play a vital role in ensuring this happens."

Research conducted among young people in the region found two-thirds thought they would drop out of education at 16 in order to start earning money and secure a better lifestyle.

As many as 70 per cent said they thought the card would encourage them to invest in further learning.

Egglescliffe headteacher Angela Darnell said: "We are delighted to be on board with the card initiative. The challenge of encouraging students to stay in learning beyond the age of 16 is one that we have to meet."
