YOUNG music hopefuls have gathered at Darlington College of Technology to show off their talents to a panel of judges, Pop Idol-style.

Seven students studying for the basic level VCE qualification performed for course tutor Andrew Meadowcroft and his colleagues to win a place on the new Higher National Diploma (HND) rock and pop course, due to start in September.

Following hot on the heels of Darlington's Pop Idol finalist Zoe Birkett, who did a work experience placement at the college last year, the students hope that the course will take them on to stage careers.

Standing in front of a microphone in the revamped college studios, the performers sang classic pop tunes.

Budding singer Darryl Perry, 18, said he would like to audition for a television talent spotting contest.

"Although my ideal career would be in a band now, when I was younger I really wanted to be a pop star," he said. "I definitely would think about going for something like Pop Idols.

"It's a really good way to get noticed. I think Zoe will be a big star now."

But Mr Meadowcroft said that the students should not focus on stardom.

He said: "Although I think that all of the students are capable of being big, my motto is always: don't aim for fame, aim for success.

"You can become famous one year, but it doesn't mean you'll stay at the top the next year.

"If you can earn money from music, even in a small way, then you are a professional."

Mr Meadowcroft said the course was good because it gave students experience in as many industrial settings as possible.

He said: "We give them projects to do, such as setting up a dance band, or a tribute band, as well as working in theatrical music shows, or going on tour abroad."

Although students registered already at the college will find out next week the result of their applications for the HND course, other music candidates still have time to put their names forward for a nail-biting audition.
