AN internal investigation is under way at Chester-le-Street District Council after allegations of misconduct were made against a senior member of the authority.
A panel set up to investigate the allegations was due to report to the full council this week.
The authority would not confirm or deny that finance director Derek Shingleton was at the centre of the allegations. It is believed that two officers in his department started a grievance procedure against several colleagues, alleging bullying and harassment. Anonymous allegations were subsequently made about the role of other employees, including Mr Shingleton.
A council spokeswoman said: "A grievance has been made by a member of staff and it has been dealt with in accordance with agreed council procedures."
Referring to the claims against Mr Shingleton, she said: "An anonymous allegation was made against another employee, which is also being dealt with separately.
"It would be inappropriate to comment further on either case at this time."
