Consett has a vet's practice for the first time in 20 years, thanks to Silke Shanks and the Derwentside Industrial Development Agency (Dida).
The Consett Veterinary Centre, has only been open for three months, but already has more than 500 clients on its books.
As well as German-Born Silke, 30, the practice boasts her New Zealand-born husband Richard as practice manager, and three nurses.
"We are delighted with the response we have received," said Silke. "I am already looking at having to take on another vet to help with the large animal work."
"Dida has given us invaluable advice on everything, including finance and our business plan, as well as helping us to get bank funding and support from the Prince's Trust."
David Soulsby, business adviser for Dida, said: "We are very impressed by Silke and it is obvious that the demand was there for the business."
The practice, in John Street, Consett, offers a full range of services including surgery.
It also has pet food, books and accessories for sale.
Clients are going to the surgery from all over Derwentside and from as far afield as Newcastle and South Shields.
We are delighted to have played a part in bringing a veterinary practice back to Consett.
The couple, who have a two-year-old son, Jordan, met in New Zealand.
