North Yorkshire starlet Neil Cordell led Yorkshire to a 4-1 victory over Surrey as they retained the Inter County under-13 squash championship at Doncaster.

Cordell, who plays for York side Wigginton, produced another polished performance in defeating top string Joe Lee 9-6, 9-2, 9-3.

Meanwhile in the corresponding under-17 final at the same venue Yorkshire were pipped 3-2 by Sussex. Bedale's 2-1 win over Harrogate side Harlow kept them on top of Division One in the Hambleton Ales North Yorkshire Squash League.

Bedale are 19 points ahead of nearest rivals Harrogate Squash II, but the chasing side now has three matches in hand. With Harrogate Squash first team in third place on 69 points the race for silverware is very much a two-horse affair. Bedale's hopes of a clean sweep victory against Harlow were dashed when Yorkshire Premiership League player Tom Ellis defeated Dave Smiley (Bedale) 9-0, 9-0, 9-2. In a bottom-of-the-table First Division clash Knaresborough eased their fears of relegation with a 3-0 win over Wensleydale II. But defeat left Wensleydale firmly rooted at the foot of the table on 46 points. Harlow are second bottom on 59 with Knaresborough moving up to third from bottom on 60.

The league's best unbeaten record of the season has been ended with the defeat of Bedale's Mike Lumley.

Bedale IV beat Knaresborough III 2-1 but Adrian Forge's 9-0, 9-2, 9-0 over Lumley signalled the finale of an unrivalled record this term.

Astute observers of league affairs, however, noticed that Forge normally plays at first string. On this occasion he was appearing at No 3.

Results: Division Two: Thirsk II 2 (Steve Snodgrass, Mark Fox) Wensleydale III 1 (Fergus MacLeod); Harlow II 1 (Dave Allenby) Thirsk 2 (Steve Lacey, Derek Jenkinson); Pateley Bridge 1 (Chris Lennox) Knaresborough II 2 (Martyn Gibson, Peter Bottomley).

Division Three: Knaresborough III 1 (Adrian Forge) Bedale IV 2 (John Abbotson, Andrew Hawkswell); Harlow III 1 (Jim McGuinness) Harrogate Squash IV 2 (Ian Bexon, Martin Hughes).

Harrogate are just three points behind Hull in their bid to win Premiership status this season in the Yorkshire League.Hull lead Division One with 224 points with 11 wins in 14 matches while Harrogate - with 221 points - have 10 wins from their 14 clashes.

Currently Hull have a slight advantage on rubbers.

Harrogate's latest win, by 3-2 against York, put them well clear of third placed Hallamshire on 199 points.

A fixture bungle by a Harrogate side left their Leeds rivals high and dry in the Kall Kwik Harrogate and District Squash League.

First Division high flyers Scott Hall arrived for their clash against Harlow in Harrogate as scheduled by the league's official fixture list. But they found their rivals nowhere in sight.

Disgruntled Scott Hall decided that rather than play the match on another date they would, as entitled, claim the full 12 points. And that meant Harlow incurred the loss of four penalty points for failing to honour the match as scheduled.

Moortown lead the way on 110 points; Scott Hall are second on 107; Adel third with 93 and Nomads fourth on 91. Nomads have a match in hand on the top three sides.

Moortown held on to their top spot with a 2-1 win at Ilkley.

Adel continued their second half of the season revival, moving up into third place with a 2-1 victory at Nomads.
