THEY may not be budding David Beckhams, but a group of soccer-mad youngsters are showing they have just as much passion for the game.

What started as a kickabout on the local recreation field has developed into the launch of the Wolsingham Football Academy.

Every Saturday, come rain or come shine, around 30 boys from all parts of Weardale turn up to be put through their paces by FA coaches Colin Dixon and Brian Harrison and two assistants.

Colin kicked off the weekly sessions for six to 12-year-olds three years ago. "I thought there was something better for kids to do on a Saturday morning than just sit about watching TV or playing with a computer," he said. It wasn't until Brian, a soldier for 24 years, arrived on the scene that the academy started to take shape."I suppose with my Army training I was able to bring a certain amount of discipline and organisation to the coaching sessions," he said. "I am also very keen to develop confidence and team spirit in the boys."

Haulage boss Peter Monkhouse - his father Tony was the "Weardale White Rhino" of amateur soccer fame - has been so impressed by what has been achieved at the academy that he has decided to sponsor them with training kit.

"I think it's a grand idea and something that can only help promote community spirit," he said.

On the touchline every Saturday giving encouragement to the boys is 69-year-old Stan Gibbon, who turned out for the likes of Witton Park and Crook Town as a youngster. Stan has played opposite some famous names during him time, including Newcastle boss Bobby Robson when he turned out for his native Langley Park.
