Darlington Church and Friendly League

The game of the day took place between SCA and The Three Tuns which was won 5-4 by The Tuns. This game had everything but looked all over at half-time as the Tuns had raced into a 5-0 lead and were comfortably holding their opponents. However in the second half SCA took the game to The Tuns and scored four of their own which led to a very exciting and frantic last few minutes. The Tuns scorers were Stefan McGowan(2), Ian Maddison, Steven Hall and Thomas Lauden with Lee Hammond(2), Stuart Ord and Paul Alton replying for SCA.

A tight game took place between Aycliffe Saints and Hydro which was won by The Saints by the odd goal in three. This was a game that could have gone either way and but for some good goalkeeping from both keepers the scoreline would have been very different. The Saints goalscorer was Johnny Craig with a brace and Rob Chambers notched for Hydro.

An interesting game took place between Central Borough and The Otter & Fish which resulted in a 2-0 win for The Otter. Neil Bell scored twice in the first three minutes but from then onwards the game was a catalogue of missed chances for both sides with both secretaries commenting on the fact that they could not believe that there were no more goals scored.Paul Scott in the Central goal was once again in inspired form for his team culminating in a superb penalty save in the dying minutes.

Another close game was played out between The Mowden and The Navy Club which saw The Clubbers run out 2-1 winners. This was as close a game as the scoreline suggests with both teams having opportunities to win the game. The Navy Club's scorers were Wayne Pratt (which was the Club's 100th goal in all competitions - well done lads) and Scott Brassell with a superb 20-yard volley which flew into the net. Ritchie Dodsworth replied for The Mowden.

The Royal continued in their quest to retain their title with a 4-0 win over The Tap & Spile which was a good result as the game was played on a gluepot of a pitch which led to mistakes all over the park. Both teams gave their all and this led to a competitive game of football despite the terrible conditions underfoot. The Royal's goals came from Ian Jenkins, Simon Hares, Mark Warnes and Paul Cleary.

The final game played resulted in a 5-2 win for Wheatsheaf Wanderers over The Greyhound. This was a good result for The Wheatsheaf as their opponents played some nice stuff and they had to be at their best to keep them at bay, especially during the second half. Darren Tate, Andrew Russell, Steven Houlahan and Martin Houlahan with two were the Wheatsheaf scorers, with Nigel Hogg and Michael Ryan scoring for The Greyhound.

l By kind permission of Darlington FC the League's League Cup Final will take place at Feethams on Wednesday, May 1 (6.30pm).
