NEW charges introduced for pest control are to be challenged by Richmond Town Council.

Fees for the disposal of rats on domestic properties were introduced by Richmondshire District Council earlier this year. However, at a meeting of town councillors it was claimed the £20 charge could deter people from reporting problems.

Councillor Stuart Parsons told said he had been made aware of an incident in which a resident reported seeing rats in an elderly neighbour's garden and once they had been destroyed was promptly sent a bill. He said: "I find it rather worrying that, if you take it upon yourself to report something that is a public health nuisance, you are then charged. People might begin to think again."

Coun John Harris said the charge was due to rise to £30 in the new financial year while the mayor, Coun Tom Burrows, suggested people may be tempted to use poison themselves, which could put them in danger.

The town council voted to write to the district authority urging it to rethink the idea.
