Shildon Railway have denied that they're folding - and instead have appointed an Australian professional to improve their fortunes.

Rumours have swept the Durham County League that the Railwaymen were about to pull out of the league after 50 years' membership, but chairman Jim Robinson has denied that is the case.

"We're certainly not folding, we're very much alive and kicking," he said.

"It's true that some players have left the club, but we have now brought in a professional who will help us bring youngsters through from the local community.

"We are very confident that we'll be able to field two teams in the A and B divisions every week."

Shildon have appointed a Western Australian, Charlie Burke, who has experience with Stockton in the North-East Premier League.

"Charlie will be a welcome addition, because we want to kick-start our juniors again as well as bringing positive benefits to the club.

"He will have specific coaching duties, and hopefully he'll be able to work in the local community as well.

"He batted in the middle order for Stockton, and in one game took five wickets with the ball, which isn't bad going in that league.

"So hopefully, he'll be able to pass on his know-how to all the players at the club, both young and old."

The club are also hoping to stage an annual invitation competition in memory of long serving official John Raw, who sadly died during the winter after several decades of service. "He will be sadly missed by everybody, because he put his heart and soul into this club," said Robinson.
