THE future of a farmers' auction mart that has been an important part of the community for generations has been assured.

Concerns were raised over the future of the mart in Masham, North Yorkshire, because it has not been open since last February, when it shut because of the foot-and-mouth crisis.

Rumours that the 81-year-old mart was to close were scotched in January when it was revealed that the directors were looking at ways to reopen it and hoped to fill the gap left by the impending loss of Ripon mart.

Under the partnership with Craven Cattle Marts, in Skipton, North Yorkshire, the opening sale of store cattle will take place at Masham on Tuesday, April 9, sponsored by local feed merchants I'Anson Bros.

It will be followed by sheep sales on Sunday, April 14.
