TREE OF MEMORY: Staff from Asda, in Washington, planted a cherry tree in the garden of the Barmston Training Centre of the Fire Service to commemorate those who died during the two World Wars and also on September 11.

WORM TALE: Washington Village Primary School pupils re-enacted the tale of the Lambton Worm at the opening of the B&Q retail warehouse on Armstrong Industrial Estate, which has created 37 jobs.
