POLICE have set up a security scheme aimed at cracking down on the growing number of thefts of older vehicles.

Detectives in Sunderland say a pattern of car thefts is emerging in parts of the city, showing thieves are targeting older models.

To combat this, Sunderland City area command has set up a security device loan scheme to drivers of L-registered or older cars.

In a joint scheme involving the area command, Sunderland City Council and Sunderland Housing Group, 500 steering wheel locks are being made available.

Motorists with cars considered most at risk will be identified by officers and invited to take advantage of the offer.

Sergeant Bryan Whitfield said: "This is a long-term strategy to combat car crime in the north of Sunderland.

"When we looked closely at the pattern of car theft in the areas of Marley Potts, Southwick and Witherwack, it was apparent that thieves were favouring older vehicles.

"They are targeted as the easy option, compared to newer vehicles with more sophisticated security systems."

Finance for the locks, supplied by Saxon Industries, has come from the Sunderland North Councillors Fund.

Officers from the City North Community Policing Team will be distributing the locks over the next month, starting in the Marley Potts area
