UNION representatives are demanding substantial pay rises for GNER's train drivers in a move that has sparked fears of more rail strikes.

Rail workers' union Aslef has also submitted a claim to Richard Branson's Virgin Rail for pay increases for drivers on high speed lines.

Aslef says that only a significant improvement in pay and conditions will enable companies to retain and recruit the highly trained staff needed on the country's premier rail routes.

However, Andrew Murray, a spokesman for the union, said the pay talks were part of normal negotiations and that its members were a "long way away" from considering strike action.

He said: "At this stage, we are just talking with both GNER and Virgin Rail about a substantial pay increase as part of normal negotiations. I think we are a long way away from talking about strike."

On Thursday, Scotrail offered its 750 drivers a 22 per cent pay increase after they staged four 24-hour strikes.

But the news has prompted rumours of further rail disruptions and walkouts if a suitable deal is not offered.

No one at GNER was available for comment last night.
