AN international search for information about a young North-East flight engineer killed in 1944 has proved unsuccessful.

Sergeant Clive Gilroy was killed when his bomber was shot down on the way to Magdeburg, in Germany, overnight on January 21/22, 1944.

Six people perished in the incident and only the Canadian pilot of the Halifax bomber of 431 Squadron RCAF survived.

Canadian Doug Kent is now compiling a book about the experiences of the surviving pilot and would like to dedicate it to his crew members.

Last year, he asked readers of The Northern Echo to provide any information that they had about the crew and Sgt Gilory.

Unfortunately, no one got in touch but Mr Kent, who hopes to get the book published this year, is still hopeful someone will unearth information to help him.

Mr Kent knows Sgt Gilroy was the son of John and Alice Gilroy, from the Pierremont area of Darlington. He was 19 when he died.
