MORE than 400 people gathered to pay their respects to the Queen Mother at a thanksgiving service in Ripon cathedral during the weekend.

The Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, Lord Crathorne, civic leaders, members of the armed forces and the Royal British Legion were among the congregation which paid tribute to her life and work on Saturday evening.

Led by the Bishop of Ripon and Leeds, the Right Reverend John Packer, the service included an address by the Dean of Ripon, the Very Reverend John Methuen, as well as performances by choirs from Richmond and Harrogate.

Lessons were read by Lord Crathorne and Major Tony Glasgow MBE, of the 38 Engineer Regiment, based at the city's Claro Barracks.

The Queen Mother shared her love of the city with her grandson, Prince Charles, and, during the final hymn, a portrait of her was taken to the west end of the cathedral, where a wreath of Elizabeth of Glamis roses were laid.

l Prayers for the Queen Mother were said during evensong at Durham Cathedral yesterday. The cathedral's flag will fly at half-mast until after Tuesday's funeral.
