FOUR Tees Valley companies have been honoured for commitment to disabled workers.

They were among 37 North-East firms to receive recognition at a ceremony in Newcastle.

All four have clinched Disability Symbol Status, which means they have agreed to meet the Employment Service's high standards when dealing with disabled candidates or employees. This includes guaranteeing interviews for those who meet minimum criteria, holding regular development interviews and disability awareness training for all staff.

The four companies were Darlington and District Hospice Movement; Endeavour Housing Association, in Thornaby; Independent Living Project, in Stockton; and Stockton Borough Voluntary Development Agency.

Diane Hedley, the Employment Service's deputy director for the North-East, who presented the disability symbol certificates, said: "They have shown they are committed to offering a level playing field to all employees."
