A PROJECT is hoping to secure enough funding to provide a future for an east Cleveland landmark.

Gisborough Priory, in Guisborough, dates back to the 12th century.

The monument is owned by Lord Gisborough, but under the care of English Heritage and managed by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council.

Guisborough Town Pride, a charity made up of local people who hope to regenerate the town and restore a pride in the area, is also involved through the Priory Project, which was formed in 1998 as a means of developing the landmark.

The project has a vision to revitalise the priory site, which involves the development of an interpretation centre, to document the history of the priory, as well as opening up and extending more of the gardens and grounds for regular public use.

It is hoping to secure enough funding to produce a detailed set of plans on how that can be achieved.

The feasibility study will cost about £10,000.

Judith Arber, of the Priory Project, said: "It involves getting useful statistics of expected costings so that we can show people what we want to do.

"We have to show that we have consulted with the public and that what we are planning is in line with expectations."

A number of fundraising activities will be taking place in the Guisborough area during the next few months to help with the project.

These include a quiz night at the Tap and Spile pub, in Westgate, on Tuesday, April 23, at 8.30pm, when project members will be on hand to discuss ideas for the priory.

On Friday, may 31, there will be educational activities for schoolchildren at the priory, with a fun day and evening concert on Saturday, June 1.

Anyone wanting to help with the fundraising is asked to call (01287) 635019.
