Organisers of a late-night firework display to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee, in Knaresborough, have been told to make it patriotic and to curb high volume explosives.

Eileen Ferguseon, co-ordinator of the celebrations around the castle grounds on June 3, wants a red, white and blue theme running through the display, rather than a series of loud explosions.

The firework display is expected to start at about 10.45pm. But three-times Knaresborough mayor, Mrs Ferguson, who is helping to organise the celebration for the Chamber of Trade, said: "I've told the people who are doing the fireworks that we want no rockets or bomb-like explosions.

"We have requested the red white and blue theme because it will fit in with the occasion.

"Old people, children and pets can be terrified by some of the huge explosions let off these days," she said.

Organisers of the event are celebrating a £1,325 grant for the occasion, just approved by Knaresborough Town Council, plus a £300 grant from Harrogate Borough Council.

The theme will be "something for all ages."

It will start with a children's disco, followed by a short Royal British Legion Service, a reception for civic leaders and an adult disco.

The evening will end with singing of the National Anthem and the fireworks.

As a lead-in to the event, traders are being encouraged to decorate their shop windows in a salute to the Queen's 50-year reign
