A group of North-East public figures met museum bosses from across the region yesterday to discuss an innovative funding initiative.
Management staff from Beamish Museum, near Gateshead, Bowes Museum at Barnard Castle, County Durham, Hartlepool Museum and Tyne and Wear Museums want a slice of £270m of Government cash.
The money will be made available under the Council for Museums Archives and Libraries in the Renaissance in the Regions report.
Speaking for the partnership, Beamish director Miriam Hart said the plan was to create a hub of excellence to support the museum network of the region.
She said: "The MPs were very supportive and keen to hear what we had to say, and were delighted to see that the region has been proactive in putting together a positive and coherent action plan."
Those attending the meeting included MPs Kevan Jones and Derek Foster, and ex-union chief Lord Burlison.
