POLICE were yesterday sifting their way through CCTV footage to try and establish how a man ended up being crushed to death at a North-East re-cycling plant.

The body of David John Griffiths was found at the premises of Teesside Waste Management on Dockside Road, Middlesbrough near the Riverside Stadium, on Friday afternoon.

Mr Griffiths, 39, who was from the Middlesbrough area, was found by workmen who were sorting and grading through piles of rubbish at the premises. A post mortem has revealed he had sustained extensive crush injuries.

Inquiries were yesterday concentrated on the last known movements of Mr Griffiths. It is known he had been drinking in Di Niros and the Issac Newton pubs in Zetland Road, Middlesbrough on Thursday night and early Friday morning.

He also made a telephone call to his wife at home just after 3am on Friday. Detectives were yesterday looking at CCTV footage taken from across the town to trace Mr Griffiths last movements.

Detective Superintendent Mark Braithwaite, who is leading the inquiry, said: "It is unclear as to how or why this man came to be at these premises and I am keeping a completely open mind. I would appeal to anyone who may have any information or who was out with David on Thursday night to get in touch on (01642) 303187."

When found Mr Griffiths was wearing dark blue jeans, black and white striped trainers and a grey almost lilac ribbed top which had a small zip at the front.

He was also wearing a gold band wedding ring on his left hand and a gold signet ring with black stone on his right hand.

He was approximately six foot tall and had an almost unshaven head, a couple of days facial stubble and a thin ginger moustache. He also had tattoos on his arms, legs, back and chest.

The death is being treated as suspicious.
