A DERELICT coachworks could be demolished to make way for bungalows for the elderly.
A meeting of Sedgefield Borough Council's planning committee on Friday will decide whether to allow 18 bungalows to be built on the site of a former coachworks in Spennymoor.
The plans involve demolishing the former Raines Coachworks and replacing it with three terraces of bungalows and a pair of semi-detached homes, with the rest of the houses located on the site of the coachwork's car park.
The planning application, which has been submitted by Tees Valley Housing Association, has already been recommended for approval by planning officers, on condition that a site assessment is carried out to see if the land is contaminated.
In a separate bid, Three Rivers Housing is also proposing to build eight bungalows for the elderly on land to the rear of Whitworth Terrace, Spennymoor.
Local people have largely supported the scheme, because it involves redeveloping poorly maintained grassland.
Those plans have also been recommended for approval and will be considered by Sedgefield borough councillors on Friday.
