A NORTH-EAST jail will provide a jobs boost through a new £15m wing for dangerous prisoners with personality disorders.

High security Frankland Prison, on the outskirts of Durham City, is one of the jails chosen by the Government last year to pilot the new unit, which will hold up to 80 inmates and will provide assessment and treatment.

It could create up to 200 jobs for prison officers and mental health professionals and is due to open in 2004.

Prison governor Ivor Woods said it was an honour to be chosen to create the unit.

The prison has won three Charter Marks, awarded for excellence in public service, in the past two years.
