THE campaign to upgrade a busy road is being stepped up.

Transport Minister David Jamies is to meet council chiefs from Scarborough and Ryedale and Ryedale MP John Greenway, who are pressing for the A64 Scarborough to York road to be made a dual carriageway.

Mr Greenway said: "The road has become a nightmare."

He said that with the start of the holiday season the queues of traffic heading for the Yorkshire coast was already a problem.

The Highways Agency had recently carried out a major consultation exercise on its suggested road safety improvements.

But Mr Greenway said: "The general feeling is that it was a waste of time."

Julian Rudd, Ryedale District Council's plans and conservation officer, said: "There is a strong case to dual the single carriageway sections of the A64. The experience of road users is of several accident blackspots, dangerous junctions and bends, significant congestion and frustration due to the slow moving traffic."

The A64 has one of the worst fatality rates of any road in North Yorkshire.

On one three-mile stretch, between Welburn and the Malton bypass, there have been 12 death crashes in six years.
