Tom Ward entertained Charlie Donaghy in the Final of this season's matches after the players had agreed to toss for choice of venue. Both players had come through the two qualifying leagues in second place but had disposed of the winners of the opposite league in the semi-final.

The Final began in dismal fashion as the scorer was rarely troubled in the first few visits by either player. The combination of safety play and failure to take advantage of any opportunity looked as if the match would be a miserable affair. However everything changed when both eventually reached 20 points. Surprisingly the time taken to reach that mark proved greater than the time to complete the match as both players seemed to find their range together.

Ward was the first to go clearly ahead with a 21 but immediately Donaghy replied with 23. A couple of visits later Ward knocked in another twenty plus only see the immediate reply again to keep the scores level. A couple of good scoring visits again moved Ward ahead but the reply again was positive as Donaghy hit a thirty and twenty to move clear.

This time it was Ward who recovered to again edge slightly ahead. He looked to be on the way to completing victory but broke down six points from game. Donaghy failed to score and Ward went in to get five but still fell one short whilst Donaghy needed 25. The first 21 came easily but the cannon to make him two short of game saw a double kiss, which separated the balls. An attempt at a deep right angle screw shot the length of the table missed by a couple of inches, leaving Ward a simple in-off the red to win 150-148 in a tremendous match.
