Richmond's King's Head Hotel hosts a fundraising evening in aid of the local branch of the Alzheimer's Disease Society tonight.

Leyburn author, Dulcie Lewis, is the guest speaker and will be shedding more light on curious cures. A flower arranging demonstration is planned by staff from Richmond's Orchard Florists, in Queen's Road. The event begins at 7.30pm. Admission costs £5, including refreshments.

NEW PRESIDENT: Richmond shopkeeper and Gayles resident Pat Fava has been elected president of the Richmond and Dales Soroptimists. Newcastle Royal Infirmary's Bubble Appeal will be the organisation's chosen charity for the next year with events including wine-tasting, a visit to the opera and an outing with the residents of Richmond's Ryders Court in the pipeline.

GRAND EFFORT: The presentation of a cheque for £2,000 completed a successful year of fundraising by the Richmond St Teresa's Hospice Support Group. Members have raised £11,988 in the past 12 months. All who have helped were given credit at the branch's recent annual meeting, where hospice nurse manager, Elaine Isham, was the guest speaker.

SPORTS AWARD: The Wensleydale School, in Leyburn, has received a Sportsmark Award from Sport England in recognition of its commitment to physical education and sports provision. It is one of 507 schools in England to be commended in this year's awards, with 457 receiving Sportsmark status and 50 receiving Sportsmark Gold status.

JUBILEE CONCERT: Ripon Cathedral Choir will be giving a concert at Aske Hall, Richmond, on July 5 to help celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee.

MAGIC LANTERN: Local author and magic lantern showman Robin Lidster will be showing comic and colourful images of Scarborough in Victorian times in Scalby library tonight. Tickets are £2 for adults and £1 for children,
