AN offer to help motorists make their cars more secure has been extended after proving a huge success.

Cleveland Police began selling high security Diskloks at discounted prices to owners of older vehicles, in an effort to cut car crime.

In five weeks, the force has sold more than 1,300 of the gadgets for £25 each, rather than the £80 retail price, and the offer has been extended until the end of this month.

Crime prevention officer Gerry McBride said: "Every Disklok sold is an opportunity to stop a vehicle being stolen.

"Many other security devices are often removed in seconds.

"Apart from this lock being a visual deterrent, it is also the most effective on the market.

"We are hoping in the next six to 12 months that we will see a considerable drop in the theft of older cars."

The vehicles targeted in the campaign are Vauxhall Cavalier, Astra, Belmont, Nova, Corsa, Calibra models and Ford Sierra, Escort, Orion and Fiestas - all up to 1994.
