A man was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation after a blaze at a flat in Mount Parade, Harrogate, early yesterday morning.

The fire is believed to have been caused by a chip pan.

Police meeting: The public will have a chance to quiz members of North Yorkshire Police Authority when they meet at the Stone Cross civic centre, in Northallerton, on Monday. A public question time session starts at 11.30am. The authority will also be considering the county force's new race equality scheme.

Speed CALL: Croft Parish Council is to request to the highway authority to have South Parade, which is the approach road to the village school, restricted to a 20mph speed limit.

Art show: Local artwork will be exhibited at Bedale Hall, from May 30 to June 1, as part of the area's Golden Jubilee celebrations. Entry is free, and refreshments will be available.

College award: Norton College has been given a Schools Curriculum Award for the quality of its relationship with the local community. The school is one of only eight in Yorkshire to be so awarded.

Heslington Hall has been restored after a major renovation. The hall stood empty for many years after the Second World War.

Egyptian FUN: The Royal Pump Room Museum in Harrogate is holding a family fun day with an Egyptian theme, on Sunday, from noon to 4pm. Activities will include drawing with hieroglyphics and a children's trail through the new Land of the Pharaohs exhibition. For details, call (01423) 556188.
