A LODGE in South Park, Darlington, that dates from the mid-19th Century, is to be transformed.

The lodge, which was built in 1853, will be restored and turned into a base for the park's new manager and park ranger after plans were approved by Darlington Borough Council's planning committee.

New lavatories and a classroom will be built to encourage school visits and a large hedge between the lodge and caf will be removed.

A plaza area is also planned between the lodge and caf, with tables, chairs and trees.

The tea room will be revamped and moveable screens installed, allowing visitors to look out over the plaza.

A ramp will also be built at the caf to improve access for disabled people.

A single-storey extension will link the lodge and caf, and the design will reflect that of the existing buildings.

The plans are part of a multi-million pound scheme proposed by the council to restore the park to its former glory.

The Campaign for the Protection of Rural England praised the plans and said that South Park was an asset to Darlington that deserved attention.

Other plans for the park include replacing play equipment and installing a skatepark and ball court.

The bandstand will become a focal point for events.

English Heritage has not yet advised the planning committee of its views on the lodge and caf proposals.

Councillors decided to grant planning permission subject to a positive response being received from English Heritage.
