AUTHORS have been invited to take A Novel Approach to their work through a creative writing competition.

The competition has attracted high quality entries from all over the region since it was started by Wear Valley Writers in memory of one of their founder members Tom Wetherill.

The event is open to anyone over 14 who should submit a 500-word synopsis of a novel, together with a 1,000-word sample from anywhere in the text.

At stake is a £500 first prize, with £200 for the runner-up, and the winning entries will be read by a leading publisher and agent.

Judges are novelist Elizabeth Gill, author of The Black Prince, and columnist Sharon Griffiths, of The Northern Echo. The panel is chaired by novelist Wendy Robertson.

Closing date for entries is September 1. More information is available from Bishop Auckland Town Hall, County Durham, on (01388) 602610 or via the events page at www.durham.gov.uk/bishopaucklandtownhall
