A TOWN is to invest millions of pounds in ridding itself of the image of a dated, downmarket seaside resort.

High priority will be placed on enhancing the environment, natural and built heritage, and quality of services in Scarborough.

The scheme to forge a new reputation for the town is part of Government regeneration agency Yorkshire Forward's urban renaissance programme.

An arts and festival action group has already been drawn up to assess the potential for major concerts and cultural events to take place in the town.

The next step for the initiative will come on Monday night when consultants to Yorkshire Forward reveal further details of its proposals.

More than 1,000 people attended a community planning weekend at the Scarborough Spa last month to air their views.

Borough council chief executive John Trebble said: "The urban renaissance process is now entering a very important stage and it is crucial that the momentum that emerged during the community planning weekend is maintained.

"The bones for the new vision were revealed at the Spa in April. Now it is time to look in greater detail at what is being reported and to find ways for the community to take these ideas forward."

Civic leaders believe an improved town centre can be achieved if new housing and quality streets, squares and public spaces are created to improve the attractiveness of the low-value area.
