GUISBOROUGH'S ultra marathon runner Sharon Gayter has booked her place in Europe's 24 hour championships after clocking up an incredible 217.5km (136 miles) in the gruelling race at Apeldoorn in Holland.

Gayter is the current No 2 in the world after suffering a set back last year due to the foot-and-mouth crisis.

She had to do all her training on the road, which played havoc with the ankle she injured in a road accident two years ago.

She said: "I needed to run only 190k to qualify for the European Championships and I was way above that.

"It is also the best run by a British athlete over 24 hours in the past two years, including the men, so I have got to be happy with that."

Gayter finished the clear ladies winner in the race and was fourth overall, behind two Germans and a Dutchman, to prove beyond all doubt that her fitness problems are behind her.

She added, "I am looking forward to the Europeans because I feel I can run well and I know that I can win a medal if all goes well.

"I have won a silver team medal in the past, but never an individual medal."

She now plans to run in one more major warm-up event before challenging for the European Championships in Gravigny in France, where she is likely to be the sole British runner
