Worthington Durham County CIU Summer League

Fishburn A are in top spot in the Fist Division after they whitewashed their hosts at Willington and now lead by one point from Wheatley Hill A. The Fishburn points came from Peter Davison, John Griffin, Charlie Hirst, John Carter and Brian Quest.

Wheatley Hill A dropped their first point of the season when Jimmy Evans took a point for Shotton Palms in their home game. It proved a revenge victory for Jimmy for he beat Dean Bryden, who had knocked him out in the semi-finals of the Winter Handicap. The Hill's winners were Alan Hall, Dennis Clish, Ronnie Peacock and Jack Wright.

Reigning champions, Old Shildon moved in a point behind Wheatley Hill A after they whitewashed the visiting Spennymoor A. Steven Bennett set Old Shildon on the winning path with a 39 break and was followed with a win for Michael Pratt, who put in a 34 break. Charlie Blake, Jossie Aldworth and Billy Goggins took points to complete the home win. Ronnie Hall gave Newton Aycliffe a good start in their home game against Witton Gilbert. However the visitors then took over with wins from Paul Nord, John Rooney senior, John Rooney junior and Ian Renwick. Neil Spender made his debut for Ferryhill and took the first point at Brandon but then the home side settled to win the remaining frames through Colin Goodrick, Graeme Jackson, John Hall and Brian Graham.

Crook Belle Vue jumped to the top of the Second Division after they took all five points at Fishburn B with wins from Gordon Sample, John Warriner, Ken Rider, Arnold Fleming and Harold Lomax. Durham City moved in two points behind Crook following their odd point home win over Sherburn Village. The home sides had wins from Malcolm Anderson, Eric Wright and Gary Ward with Michael Crisp and John Bower replying.

Meadowfield went two up at Wheatley Hill B with wins by Malcolm Hughes and Ian Hodgson. The home side levelled with wins from Jock Frost and Tony Ellison. The visitors edged to victory when Stephen Hughes beat Norman Carr in the decider.

Ivan Pye made his debut for Stanley Central and hit top form to put his team ahead at Spennymoor B. Harold Grimes increased the Central's lead before Alan Rowell reduced the arrears. Walter Cornell clinched victory for the Central with Kevin Riley taking the final frame for the Moors.

Only John Maddox managed to take a point for Newhouse on their visit to Langley Park. The home sides wins came from Ray Coates, Kevin Keers, Stephen Renwick and Paul Morgan.

Wingate took over the top spot in the Third Division after they only dropped one point to the visiting Leeholme A, who had Barry Shaw as their only winner. Geoff Howe put in a 42 break to put Wingate on the way. New Durham are making their presence felt on their return to competitive snooker after a break of sixteen years when they only dropped one point on their visit to Leeholme B. John Taylor took the only point for the home side, whilst Tony Thompson, Thomas Cairns, Terry Patterson and Phil Garr won for New Durham.

Hunwick were never headed on their visit to Coundon. Tom Ward put the visitors ahead with Malcolm Ryder levelling. Neville Blenkinsopp restored the visitors lead only to see Dennis Payne equalise. In the decider Hunwick's Trevor Lomax beat Gary Goulbourn.

Jeff Evans put Sacriston ahead against the visiting Tow Law, but the visitors moved into the lead with wins from Charlie Donaghy and Doug Watson. Willy Nixon levelled the match but then Arthur Henderson produced one of his best displays to take the Lawyers to victory by beating Mark Brown.

The results of the First Round were Ian Hodgson 20 (Meadowfield) lost to Adrian Twist 27 (Sherburn Village); Mark Brown 50 (Leeholme B) lost to Frank Nicholson 10 (Coundon); Sonny Hann 18 (Crowtrees) beat Neville Blenkinsopp 28 (Hunwick). There were 61 byes.

South West Durham Association

Harrowgate Hill pulled off a very good two points home win over Darlington Railway Institute to hold on to their top spot in the First Division. Hopetown move just a point behind after they whitewashed the visiting Tindale Crescent, with Darlington Snooker Club A dropping two points behind in third place.

In the Second Division, Darlington Snooker Club C made a two points home win over Shildon Elm Road to lead by one point at the top from Bishop Auckland Cricket Club, Old Shildon and Darlington Rileys, who share the second place.
