DRIVERS are being warned to check their vehicles are in order before Northumbria Police launches a tyre safety week.
From Monday, officers will be asking motorists to have their tyres checked by experts from the Tyre Industry Council.
The checks will take place across the force area, with officers stopping private motorists and commercial vehicles at random.
Motorists who fail the test face £60 fixed penalty fines and could have their driving licence endorsed with three penalty points.
Feedback from last year's tyre safety survey highlighted a poor knowledge of the law on tyres, with just 20 per cent of drivers stopped knowing the legal minimum tread depth, of 1.6mm.
More than 30 per cent of the drivers stopped did not know the penalties for defective tyres.
