A CAT'S tale kept schoolchildren spellbound, when Sunderland FC mascot Samson the Cat made a special appearance for book week.

People from all walks of life have been visiting St Joseph's RC Primary School Gilesgate, on Mill Lane, Durham, to read stories to children for the school's promotion of reading.

Throughout the week 35 people, ranging from a fireman to the Mayor of Durham, Eileen Rochford, brought in their favourite children's books to keep youngsters amused.

Yesterday it was the turn of the Black Cats' mascot to read to the reception class, which posed its own problem as the mascot does not speak.

Headteacher Angela Boyle said: "Because Samson doesn't speak, he brought his friend Wayne to read the story and Samson sat by his side."

Later in the week, children and staff will be dressing up as characters from children's books and a book fair is being held in school.
