BOGUS callers are posing as charity workers, a charity has warned.
The confidence tricksters have been knocking on doors in the Chester-le-Street area of County Durham, asking for money for the charity Scope, which represents people with cerebral palsy.
Scope has warned residents not to hand over money to anyone asking for donations.
Dawn Dawson, manager of the Scope shop in Front Street, Chester-le-Street, said: "I've had about half a dozen people coming into the shop, saying they have had people knocking on their doors asking for donations for Scope.
"It's giving us a bad name and they're getting money off people.
"We have a van that calls round for bags of donations, but these people have been asking for monetary donations, which we don't do."
Police say they have not been informed of any incidents, but anyone with information should call them on 0191-388 4311.
