A Newton Aycliffe couple have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with a party for friends and family.

Barney and Betty Milvain, of Arrowsmith Square, were married on May 24, 1952 in their home town of Gateshead. They moved to Newton Aycliffe three years later and have lived there ever since.

Coppersmith Mr Milvain, 72, who served in the RAF, worked in shipyards on the River Tyne and at the former North Road Locomotive Works in Darlington, before moving to factories on Newton Aycliffe industrial estate.

Mrs Milvain, 70, was employed by GEC and also worked at the Bachelor's store in the town centre.

The couple celebrated their anniversary with a party at the Moore Lane Sports Club on Saturday, and yesterday they received a presentation from the Mayor of Sedgefield Borough, Councillor David Newell.
