THE newly-named club's young girl's athletes team emulated their seniors by getting their season off to a magnificent winning start.

They managed a crushing victory in the National Youth Athlete fixture at Clairville where they notched up no fewer than 33 wins.

In the Under-17 age group Marise Barelay, fresh from her success in the North-East championship, scored a sprint treble (100m, 200m, 4x100m) and there were further wins for Bev Marwood (DT) and Laura Seenasagom (100m).

The Under-15s were in brilliant form scoring wins in every track event and all the throws (shot, discus, javelin) with Debbie Forster picking up a hat-trick of wins (200m, 75mH, 4x100m) and there were several double winners, Faye Winspear (100, 4x100m) Zoe Verrill (800, shot), Emma Payne (75mH, long jump), Naomi Lowery (200m, 4x100m), Holly Scrafton (1500m, havelin).

The Under-13 team also enjoyed multiple successes with Dianne Gallogly (100m, 70H, 4x100m) a treble winner as were Kate Thompson (100m, 70mH, 4x100m) and Jayne Fleming (150m, high jump, 4x100m) with Ruth McDowell achieving two wins (long jump, 4x100m) and Yasmin Betts and Kristina Grant chipped in with wins in the shot putt competitions.

Poor weather and fixture clashes affected the attendance at the second NYSD match at Shildon, but there were still some fine performances with both men's and women's 1500m producing exciting races.

Stephen Hepple switched from his usual 5000m to 1500m and won in 4:05.9 while Bernadette Taylor (Darlington) was inside five minutes for the ladies race.

Carol Driffell (Middlesbrough AC) who cleared over six metres in the long jump provided the best jump of the evening with 5.88m. In the javelin Adam Robson better known as a sprint specialist won the U17 event with Cheryl Fowle (New Marske) winning the senior ladies event in 24.28m.

Evenwood Road Runners

At the Thirsk three and ten-mile races, the junior members all put in an excellent performance. First home was Nathan Nicholson in 17.46, second but first club girl Zoe Bailey finished in 19.23, hot on her heels were Sarah and Demi Douthwaite with 20.59 and 23.18,. Rebecca Johnston made her debut in a good 25.10 a minute later came Amy Coatesworth and Harry Welsh 27.17. Both William and Emily Coatesworth share 31.23. Another good debut start from Alice Johnston completing the three-mile run in 32.22.

The seniors returned with Kenny Sams in 86 mins and Donna Douthwaite having yet another good run for 89.30. Alan Dickinson and Alan Thompson were separated by one minute 98 and 99.

First home again for the club was Kenny Sams in 51.10 at the Coxhoe 6, with Alan Dickinson 60.57 and 63 mins for Alan Thompson.

Thirsk and

Sowerby Harriers

May 22 was the date of the third fixture of the Harrogate Evening Road Race League at Starbeck, Harrogate, the home team being Nidd Valley Road Runners.

On a cool windy evening, over an undulating course of just under 6 miles there were 175 finishers. Ian Fisher of Otley was again the winner in 29.55 minutes with Eric Williams of Richmond and Zetland 2nd in 31.38.

A total of 19 Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers took part and John Yates was the first to finish, in 24th place in 34.51.

Others: Mervin Burn was 27th 35.02, Cameron Choules 37th 35.56, Stephan Tomaszewski 51st 36.57. Team positions after three events show the main team, the Vets and the Elite Runners all in seventh place, with the Ladies Team and the Lady Vets both in fourth place.

The previous Sunday the Fountains 10k was held and two Thirsk and Sowerby runners entered. Judith Seaton was in 139th place in 54.50 minutes and Jo Fambley was 165th in 59.12. There were 179 finishers over this attractive rural course, the event being won by Paul Lowe of Mandale in 33.20 minutes.

Quakers

There was an excellent Quaker attendance at the Pier to Pier Race on Sunday, May 26. Although extremely blustery, some good times were produced over the 7.5 mile course. First home for the club was Wayne Bramley finishing 16th out of 500 runners in a time of 44:47, followed by Dawn Richardson 66th 49:03 (3rd Female).

l The Quakers/Butterwick Hospice Hamsterley 10K and Fun Run will be held on Sunday, June 2 from the Visitors Centre at Hamsterley Forrest. Enter early on the day, 10k commences at 10.30am. All proceeds will go to the Butterwick Hospice.

Leiden, Holland is this year's venue for the clubs annual trip. Departing on Friday, June 7, there are a few spaces left. The next Quaker Deadly Durham Fell Race is Sunday, June 16. Held at

Chapel Fell, this four mile race covers 1322 feet of climbing. Register on the day at Golden Lion, St Johns Chapel, Weardale. Start time 11am.

Includes two mile junior fell race commencing 10.30am. Prizes donated by Terry Deary.

The next White Horse Handicap will be ran on Thursday, June 20, commencing 7.15pm. Entry on the night, from the White Horse Hotel, Harrogate Hill, Darlington.

Shildon

OMay 25/26 the club competed at the North of England track and field championships held at the City of Manchester Stadium which is also the venue of the Commonwealth Games and following that it will be the new home ground for Manchester City FC.

Although only one medal was won by the Shildon club, which was a bronze by Vickie Finn in the 200m, there were several personal best performance in some top class competition in a marvellous stadium, an experience of a lifetime for these young athletes.

On Sunday, May 19 the girls competed at a first UK athletic young athletes league held at the King George V Stadium, Cleethorpes, the group had an excellent day considering only ten athletes made the long trip.

The following Tuesday evening a few athletes competed on home ground at the stadium 2000 at the second fixtures of the NYSD track and field.

Results - 1500m: U13 girls Abby Suffield 5:33.7; 6 Amy Bunning 5:54.3; 7 Natasha Heslop 5:57.6. U17 girls 1 Natalie Owens 5:05.6; U20 men 4 Paul Best 4:25.6.

l Anyone who would be interested in becoming part of the club which caters for all sprint and middle distance events also throws and jumps, which trains at the stadium 2000 on Monday and Wednesday evenings 6pm and Saturday morning 10am, the age groups start from eight to seniors should contact the club secretary Neil Stockley on (01388) 776083.

Crook & District

Mike Mallen picked up an excellent sixth place in the Northern Fell Challenge at the Alwinton Fell Race over 12.5 miles in a time of 1 hr. 49 mins and Gerry Hehir ran 2hr. 10 mins. Phil Carter is getting back to peak form in the O-45 category and was first in class, 12th overall, at the Pier-Pier race at Sunderland in a time of 43.46 with John Dennis close behind in a time of 44.50.

At the Melmerby 10km road race Malcolm Ingram produced a good time of 35.45 and Dennis Brown ran 38.48.
