A couple are facing charges in connection with thefts from branches of the Market Cross chain of jewellers in the region.

David Stephenson, 27, of Halifax, was remanded in custody until next Thursday when he appeared before Richmond magistrates, North Yorkshire, this week following thefts at shops in Barnard Castle, County Durham and Thirsk, North Yorkshire.

His 16-year-old girlfriend, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was released on bail. A £3,000 ring was stolen from the Barnard Castle shop on May 7.
