A LAMENT for the age of steam has been given pride of place in one of the region's most prestigious buildings.

Pensioner John Dobson, 79, has created a steam engine exhibit, made from real steam engine pieces, which bears the words of a poem harking back to the steam age. Staff at Grade I listed Seaton Holme, in Easington Village, were so impressed they have displayed it in a 1950s' exhibition, entitled The Way We Were.

Mr Dobson, who is from the village, penned the poem himself. It reads: "This old engine is cold and still, the coal affords its flame no more, no water does its boiler fill, its days of usefulness are o'er."

Alan Lowes, of Seaton Holme, said: "John produced it himself and we really liked it. It fits in so well in our exhibition.
