HARROGATE Lions Club is joining forces with the borough council to stage an event marking the Queen's Golden Jubilee on the town's Oatlands Stray, on Sunday.

Events will include a fancy dress contest depicting famous people during the Queen's reign. The RSPCA will host a family pet show, there will be an It's-a-Knockout event for local primary schools, plus a scarecrow contest. The event will run from noon to 5pm.

DOG PATROLS: Vehicles used by dog wardens in the Scarborough area have been given an eye-catching new livery incorporating a message to dog owners to "leave nothing behind but paw prints". The borough council has also introduced a free telephone line - 0800 0830492 - for the public to report dog-fouling.

BARD'S PLAY: Shake-speare's Richard III will be performed at Mount Grace Priory, near Northallerton, by Heartbreak Productions, on Friday, July 12, at 7.30pm. Admission is £8.50 for adults and £6.50 for children.

HIDDEN GARDENS: The hidden gardens of Helperby will be open to the public from noon on Sunday in aid of St Peter's Church, Brafferton. There will be refreshments, stalls, and crafts. Tickets are £2.50 for adults and £1.50 for children aged from 13 to 15, and pensioners.

PICNIC CONCERT: Young musicians from Richmond School's orchestra, swing band and wind band will entertain picnickers at Kiplin Hall, near Scorton, on Wednesday, July 10. The gates will open at 6pm for picnics and the music starts at 7pm. Admission will be £5 for adults, £4 concessions and £2 for children.

BIKER HURT: Police are seeking witnesses after a motorcyclist was seriously hurt when his machine collided with a lamp-post in South Gate, Ripon, on Friday evening. Anyone who can help is asked to call (01423) 539474.

PUB AWARD: The Star Inn, Harome, near Helmsley, has won a Jubilee Heritage Award in recognition of its role in safeguarding Britain's national architectural heritage.
