A SCHEME to encourage youngsters to take a greater interest in their community has been launched in Hartlepool.

The Community Awareness Awards are aimed at pupils who attend Dyke House, Brougham and Jesmond Road schools.

Children are asked to produce a story or drawing that reflects their community and the best three efforts from each school - as judged by a panel of residents - will receive trophies and prizes of up to £50.

The scheme is the brainchild of Communities Acting Together - a residents group set up to benefit local people - and has won £300 backing from Hartlepool Borough Council's Pride in Hartlepool Campaign.

A council spokesman said: "We want to build on recent successes with residents' associations in these areas by working more closely with young people who are, after all, the adults of tomorrow."

The awards scheme will become an annual event and will be introduced into the three schools in September.
