THE taxation division of Stockton Borough Council has earned a two-star rating for the service it provides.

The Audit Commission carried out an inspection of the taxation service, which collects council tax and business rates across the borough, in April this year.

In its report, the division was assessed as providing a good service with excellent prospects for improvement.

The scoring system used by the Audit Commission is no stars for a poor service, one star for fair, two for good and three for excellent.

The report highlights the council's reputation locally and nationally for excellence and innovation, its high long-term collection rates for both council tax and business rates and the mechanisms in place to identify and understand customers' needs.

The inspectors made recommendations to see the service improved further. Those include improving current year collection rates and that customer needs should be kept at the forefront when an IT system is implemented.
