Carmel young athletes have once again excelled on the athletics track. They have broken no fewer than 70 new school athletics records since May. The list of silverware includes winning all five team trophies, as well as 35 individual winners in the Northern Catholic Schools Athletics Championships and 17 trophies out of a possible 20 in the Darlington Schools Athletic Championships.

A special sports award evening is planned for Tuesday July 16 to honour the athletes.

The guest of honour will be Jill Bolts (nee Hunter), a double Olympian and silver medallist in the Commonwealth Games 10,000m.

Darlington Secondary Schools Town Athletic Championships- Eastbourne Complex (Tuesday 3 July 2002).

On a very wet day, at the Town Athletic Championships, Darlington's young athletes thrilled a large crowd at the Eastbourne Complex with some wonderful athletics.

With all eight schools represented and over eight hundred competitors. Carmel College athletes who once again led from the front winning 17 out of 20 trophies, including the George Clark cup as overall winners for the tenth consecutive year.

They also won six 4 x 100m relay cups, the year 7 girls 4 x 200m, year 7 boys 4 x 400m, year 9 mile team race and the 7, 8, 9 and 10 year group shields, the girls and boys overall team cups, as well as the Year 10 individual trophy for the 1 00m won by Thomas Craddock.

The majority of the Darlington Schools Athletic team were athletes from Carmel College. They enjoyed an excellent day including the following highlights.

Daniel Ghundoo became County Champion in the Junior Boys hurdles in a very fast 12.8 (a new school record). Frances Blaylock was runner up in the Inter Girls hurdles by just one tenth of a second. Stephanie Weddell took bronze in the Junior Girls Hurdles. Ryan Tinkler was runner up in the Junior Boys shot.

Christopher Burnside took silver in the Inter Boys 100m), Andrew McElvaney was 3'd in the Junior Boys Javelin.
