Darlington'S floral beauty chose the right day to be at its best, when judges for the annual Northumbria in Bloom competition visited to view what the town had to offer.

Despite the wet weather yesterday, the three judges arrived for their second visit of the year to see the borough's displays, especially those in South Park in "stunning" condition.

Rebecca Williams, Darlington Borough Council's horticultural manager, said: "It went very well, indeed. They were very impressed.

"Particularly, South Park looked fantastic. The plants themselves looked very strong and colourful."

Of the displays as a whole, she said: "This year it is stunning, particularly bearing in mind we haven't had the sunshine or the warmth to bring the flowers on."
