FARMERS around Darlington are being urged to join a scheme to drive out criminals, poachers and vandals.

The Farmwatch scheme will be based on a similar project in Teesdale. It will ensure farmers work together and with police to warn of possible offenders in the area.

Farmers will telephone each other if they see anything suspicious, and police will keep farmers informed of any operations in the area.

The National Canine Defence League's rescue centre in Sadberge has agreed to become a member of the scheme after its offices were repeatedly targeted by thieves.

Sergeant Ian Martin, of Darlington police, said: "We are depended on the eyes and the ears of the rural community.

"They have to continue to report to us, otherwise we will never win the battle to combat rural crime. We will do our best to get out there as quickly as we can."

The scheme organisers are now considering how to raise money to help to ensure the project's success.
